Andrew and Leon were given a single seed to plant. Andrew planted his seed in a flowerpot, putting it out into the sun. He watered it daily making sure it gets enough sunlight.

Leon threw his seed into the backyard near the fence separating his grandmother’s house from her neighbor. Nothing much grows there as it was too rocky. He didn’t bother to check to see if anything was growing. His seed was left to the mercy of the weather because the rains are how his seed got food.

One month later Andrew came in complaining to his grandmother, “It’s not fair, my plant doesn’t look as good, as healthy or as happy as Leon’s, and look where he planted his. There is almost no soil there, the rains watered his plant, he hasn’t even bothered to look at them. Why grandma? Why? I watered mine, my seed didn’t have to fight to survive, it had its own pot, it doesn’t have to share anything with any other plants.”

‘Son,” his grandmother led him by the hand taking him where his brother’s flowers were. “Our lives aren’t much different from plants, some of us thrive in a difficult environment with limited resources, while others can’t survive even when they have everything they need and want. Leon’s seeds have to fight to survive, yours don’t. In life when everything is handed to us, we never learn to fight and…
