Having grown up on a steady media diet of Bollywood movies, I received this message over and over: I just had to stand atop a mountain, waving my dupatta in the wind while I waited for a man to come and fight a bunch of bad guys and sweep me off my feet. To carry me away, where my life would finally begin. (Needless to say, Bollywood’s depictions of love, at least in the late 90s and early aughts, were… idealistic.)
