If a man says something offensive against women, he can point out that he is married. Oh, was my remark sexist? But I love women. The same goes for racist behavior. Oh, was that racist? I can’t be racist. I have a black friend. Here’s the thing. Just because you have someone affected close to you does not neutralize your misconduct. In other words, just because you have a friend with darker skin than you does not mean that you can’t say racist things or make your remark less racist. It is not your responsibility to judge whether your own actions or statements are racist. Furthermore, you do not have to burden your only black friend to vouch for your racist slur.
