Flash Fiction Under 1000 Words
The old lady kept staring at me, then eased closer and said, “ʻO kaʻu’ōpili liʻiliʻi maikaʻi loa.”
A sudden intense surge of power rose up in me, almost lifting me off my feet, and these words flow out of my mouth, grabbing the attention of everyone, “I kēia lā,ʻo wauʻo Kamehameha me nā taimana.”
I quickly covered my mouth, as that strange feeling deflated, pulling me down with it.
“Whoa,” Willoby grabbed me before I touched the ground.
“You can’t be Tara!” the old lady screamed.
“She isn’t your little butterfly!” burst suddenly from Malia, as she edged closer towards me.
“So, he didn’t find you,” the old woman continued, circling me. “I told them you didn’t die in the fire and they didn’t believe me.”
“Open your eyes Makaleka! Look again! She is a Caterpillar, not a butterfly!”
“But how could she have known that response,” the old woman stated, trembling.
“Maybe she’s Tara’s daughter. So, father was right after all! I knew you looked familiar, but it’s almost impossible to believe and way too coincidental! It’s been over thirty years and the bewitched fool was still looking for her!” She lunged at me as though she’d kill me.
