…hen people do get to know me, they’ll say things like, How do you not know this? You’re a fake Thai. On one hand, these comments make me feel like I’m a fraud for being myself, that because who I am doesn't match the commonly accepted version of being Thai, that I can’t exist. On the other hand, it solidifies how much I don’t fit in here and justifies my desire to escape to somewhere else.
