One step people can take to self-educate is by learning some of our history. Borikén is our Indigenous name, given by our Taíno (an Arawak people) ancestors. It means, ‘Land of the Valiant and Noble Lord.’ And while many may be familiar with Borikén’s original colonial history (the Spanish arrived in 1493), much of our unique flavor originates with our African and Indigenous heritages. From these we inherited our beloved bomba, one of our traditional folk genres (with West African roots), as well as some of the culinary traditions (think: root vegetables, like yuca) retained from our Taíno ancestors.
