I was raised to believe that God is love.

In the early 1950s, when my Catholic father married my Presbyterian mother, the Catholic church would only give permission to marry in the church if you promised to raise any children as Catholic. (By the time I got married, in 2009, they only asked that you not pressure your kids to join a different religion.)
