Is this for real? How could something is evil go on for more than 70 years?

I have been listening to the heart-wrenching accounts of young unmarried girls and women in Ireland who, from the 1920's till the 1990's, naively or forcefully become pregnant. To avoid shame, they were sent to religious institutions to secretly give birth. Their babies were put up for adoption with or without their consent, many sent to America, or put into orphanages and foster families. A high number of babies died in these institutions.
