He was also the builder of the second pyramid of Giza, but it was not completed at the time it was built. It would be excavated centuries later by Thutmose IV, and then the legendary Ramses I. Thutmose IV built the temple at the base of the statue. So, like many of the world’s greatest monuments that survive the vicissitudes of time, the Sphinx has evolved.
