Sitting in the park admiring the beauty of Autumn, the pain in her voice close by touched my heart.
“Why didn’t you tell me you had an affair with Tony?” she asked.
“I eh… eh,” another voice stuttered.
“Don’t lie to me Nessie! I went to see Linda. We need her help. I saw the son you gave up . . . “
I couldn’t see her face, but I felt the pain in her pause, and it doubles as she continued.
“I also saw the daughter I gave away. She adopted them Nessie, she adopted our children.” The tears came down with thundering anger and she cried, “she said she couldn’t save us, but she will try to save our children.”
“Did she help you?” Nessie asked in desperation.
“She has forgiven me,” the voice said.
“Think she will forgive me too for the way I treated her? I threw her out into the streets Nan! She had nowhere to go. I made her homeless!”
“And now we are where she was, forty years later!” Nan stated.
Both women sat in silence, and as I attempt to look at them the same voice continued in agony, “forty years ago we had a choice, I followed you and chose prostitution. She chose to be a waitress. She owns the restaurant she was a waitress in and ten more. How could we end up homeless again? This is where we started,” Nan’s voice trailed off into an…
