In the North, the Reconstruction Era was portrayed as an earnest but ultimately unsuccessful effort to establish and protect the newly won Constitutional rights of the former slaves. In the South, it was viewed as an oppressive and corrupt program to punish the heroes of the Lost Cause and to suppress their rights in favor of those of irresponsible freed slaves.
