Fear ripped through me. I spun around facing Willoby. His jaws were like granite, and his eyes vacant. I read that to be saying nothing.

“It disappeared with Tara,” she informed. Nodding she continued, “Everyone is searching for it, including the government.”

“No,” jet out of my mouth too quickly.

She eyed me, waiting for more. I couldn’t say another word without giving away the truth.

She released, “I didn’t think so, because if you had it, you would know it’s value and danger.”

Sensing that we were flummoxed, Malia said, “E hoʻi i kahi i hele mai ai,” she rose up off the bench and marched out of the churchyard.

I didn’t know what that meant. My eyes followed her, and with each step she took, I saw sparks of fire rising from her feet. I blinked to remove any doubt, but the sparks got bigger as she moved farther and farther away. I sensed that she was warning us.

“We have to get out of here!” I cried out.

Willoby grabbed my hand and pulled me across the churchyard. “We need to figure out our next steps. Now two people know who you are.”

“I am Tara’s daughter if what she said is true. I have my birthmark and the Yellow Diamond will prove it. This is…
