The Gift of Beauty
Flash Fiction
Sitting in the park admiring the beauty of Autumn, and the colors of the leaves as the wind assists them to slowly separate themselves from the trees, covering the rough terrain of the park, the pain in a voice close by touched my heart.
“Why didn’t you tell me you had an affair with Tony?” the voice demanded at the edge of anger.
“I eh… eh,” another voice stuttered.
“Don’t lie to me Nessie! I went to see Linda. We need her help. I saw the son you gave up . . . “ she paused.
I couldn’t see her face, but I felt the pain in her pause, and it doubled as she continued.
“I also saw the daughter I gave away. She adopted them Nessie, she adopted our children.” The tears came down with thundering anger and she cried, “She said she couldn’t save us, but she will try to save our children.”
“Did she help you?” Nessie asked in desperation.
“She has forgiven me,” the voice said.
“Think she will forgive me too for the way I treated her? I threw her out into the streets Nan! She had nowhere to go. I made her homeless!”
“And now we are where she was, forty years later!” Nan stated.
