The Truth or Victory?
“Don’t do it Paul!” Jack pleaded with his best friend. “Someone wise said, ‘a lawyer who represents himself has a fool for a client.’ You know you don’t have to pay me,” Jack assured him.
Paul Anglin sighed, stared at his friend and law partner of 33 years and said, “the man who wants the truth and isn’t afraid of it, must fight for it himself. The man who wants the truth, but is afraid of it, will hire someone to get it for him.” With those words, Paul Anglin grabbed his briefcase and walked out, his best friend’s eyes shadowing him.
Ten days later as Justice Paul Billings read the verdict, “Not guilty,” hitting his gavel on the sound-block, a loud clap pauses the pain in Paul’s heart. His head swiftly turned in the direction of the applause. Jack Mason rushed towards him with a contagious smile on his chubby face, extending his right hand saying, “Congrats man, you did it!” Easing back as the sadness on Paul’s face pushed him away, he asked, “Where is your smile? You won. Again!”
Paul took up his briefcase, turned to his friend as Jack’s smile bounces off his face with no effect, sighs, and releases, “The TRUTH is more satisfying than VICTORY, and a whole lot more PAINFULL!” Paul walked out of the courtroom wondering, ‘Did I pay too much for the truth?’ How much is the truth worth to you?
