Paul wobbled over to us, glaring obsessively at me, smiling, “Tara baby, I knew you would come back to me!

Chapter 44

I stood gaping, not knowing how to respond. Before I could speak, a lady about my age or a couple of years younger, appeared suddenly out of the darkness saying, “Come on Dad. Sorry, he’s drunk. He doesn’t know what he is saying.” She threw me a look as if she had seen me before but couldn’t remember where.

We followed her.

She halted a few paces ahead of us, then slowly rotated to a right angle, before throwing angrily at us, “Does my father owe you money?”

Willoby and I exchanged a quick glance, and he promptly said, “Yes.”

“No,” flew out of my mouth.

“Yes,” Willoby repeated, signaling me with his eyes.

She angled another ninety degrees facing us, staring at me waiting for my answer.

“No” I repeated.

“He owes you then?” she went on, pointing at Willoby, still eyeing me with penetrating eyes.

Willoby and I glared at each other, exchanging hands and eye signals. By the time we were finished arguing, she was walking away holding on to her father.
