The Yellow Hibiscus
Flash Fiction
Willoby offered the ruffians all the money he had. They grabbed the wad he held out, and expressed their gratitude, by roughing him up a bit. They gave Malia two more days to come up with the rest of the money. By now, a small crowd had gathered. Paul was bleeding from his nose and mouth and was barely breathing.
“He needs to get to a hospital!” I shouted as Malia knelt trying to revive her father. On her knees, she rested his head in her lap.
“Someone help please!” I called out while scanning around for Willoby.
“Is it Paul Webber?” a voice asks.
“Yes,” another voice concurred. “And he owes me money.”
“Me too,” another echoed.
The crowd dispersed as quickly as it had formed. A siren screamed close by, as I frantically glanced around for Willoby. He was nowhere around! A Hawaii Police Patrol car stopped in front of us. Willoby and a Police officer jumped out from opposite sides of the patrol car. The police officer used his radio and called for an ambulance after examining Paul. While we waited, he took out his phone/notebook, “My name is Officer Jamie Hamilton,” he introduced himself showing us his ID. “You are new to the island?” he asked.
