The Yellow Hibiscus

Willoby and I ate breakfast in our room. He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a burner cell phone and insisted, “Don’t make any unnecessary calls.”

I nodded, glancing the fear in his eyes, as he quickly blinked, in an attempt to hide it.

I examined the phone, then placed it on the bed and asked, “So, where did you go last night?” pushing our now empty breakfast cart out into the hallway.

“I walked around and scoped everything out.”

“Where do we start?”

“The Bernice P. Bishop Museum.”

“Why there?” I wondered.

“To learn how the ancient Hawaiians lived, traveled, dressed and worshipped.”

“You are kidding me, right?” I asked, confused.

‘We are tourists, remember.”

“As I said, you are kidding me,” I repeated.

“No, today we are tourists,” he reassured me.

“You took your heart out of your shoe!” I said, smiling. “Put it back in!” I demanded. “Have you forgotten we are on a mission?”

“No, it’s a part of the plan.” He signaled me closer. I reluctantly walked over to him. He took my hand and we both sat on the bed…
