With the Portuguese language we have achieved eight centuries of beautiful literature, leaving in it the memory of what was fundamental to European modernity. Pride is not exclusive to great countries because it doesn’t have to do with the size of a territory but with the size of the soul that filled it. The soul of my country was the size of the world… A language is the place from which we see the world and where we draw the boundaries of our thinking and feeling. From my language you can see the sea. From my tongue you can hear its rumor, just as from others you can hear the forest or the silence of the desert. That’s why the voice of the sea was the voice of our restlessness.
