“Hurry up child, or you will be late for work,” 15-year-old Lola Mitchum’s grandmother called out to her.

Lola sighs and protests, “I am not going grandma, Mrs. Williams hates me. She is always picking on me and I can’t do anything right by her.”

Mary took her granddaughter’s hand and led her outside and asks, “you said you wanted to be a doctor, right?”

Glancing around at the dilapidated houses, garbage littering the streets, drunkards sitting on the sidewalk, staring at the homeless mentally ill people in makeshift tents facing them across the street, and other statements poverty boasted about, “That’s an impossible dream Grandma. Look around you, all I see is poverty,” Lola complains.

“And you don’t want to find out why?”

Fighting the tears, Lola sighs, and release, “It’s hard grandma, being poor take so much away from us.”

“So, you already know the implications of poverty, don’t you want to know the implications of wealth?”

Lola stared into the eyes of her 85-year-old grandmother and catches another glimpse of the pain that lived in her heart and eyes. This time, it stayed long enough to reach out and touched her heart, and sadness overwhelmed her.
