Why destroy history?

In most cases, the Senate or the new emperor decreed that all statues of the former leader were to be destroyed and all coins bearing his likeness defaced. Furthermore, his name was to be removed from inscriptions, his face scratched from all paintings. Sometimes, his masks were banned from being displayed in funeral processions.
