I started to learn about our vibrant musical bomba folk tradition — a mix of call and response, where dancers have an intimate conversation with our ancestros africanos (African ancestors) via the intoxicating sounds of el tambor (the drum). I began to learn the words we inherited from our Indigenous Taíno, like batey (the meeting place or area for celebration), hurakán (hurricane), and barbacoa (barbeque).
