You are right. This is confusing.

The word that provokes the strongest reaction in North Americans conversing with Brits is the word “fag”. In North America, it is used as a derogatory and insulting name for gay people. In Britain, it is a slang term used to describe a cigarette. “Do you have a fag?” can easily be misunderstood.
